Leatherwomen and their friends from across North America and Europe convened for the twenty-fourth annual International Ms Leather Contest and twelfth annual International Ms Bootblack Contest in San Francisco between April 15th and 18th.
An esteemed panel of seven distinguished judges representing the leather community named Mollena 'Mo' Williams, Ms. San Francisco Leather 2009, as International Ms Leather 2010. She impressed the audience and judges with a stunning public performance, sharp composure, and an outstanding fantasy. Now, as International Ms Leather, she will continue to build leather community around the world.
Attendees, judges, and even a secret judge helped select Jayson DaBoi as International Ms Bootblack 2010. After two days of nearly non-stop boot shining, Jayson impressed all with a clear devotion to the art of bootblacking.
The contest weekend was not just for those who already feel part of the leather and BDSM community. Those with less knowledge about BDSM had opportunities to work on their skills and learn more in workshops and play. Illustrious instructors like Lolita Wolf and Dossie Easton taught scintillating workshops on such topics as BDSM 101, Single Tails, and The Perverted Ethical Slut.
Event attendees displayed their generosity during several fundraising events over the weekend and almost $10,000 was raised for the Leather Archives and Museum, the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom, the GLBT Historical Society of San Francisco, Venus' Playground, and the IMsL Titleholders Travel Fund.
Beyond this friendly competition during the weekend, participants mingled and cruised with leatherwomen and their friends at the many receptions hosted by leather organizations such as the Exiles of San Francisco, F.I.S.T. of Baltimore, and the Sacramento Valley Leathercorps. They also bought fun stuff for their toy bags, home dungeons, closets, and personal libraries from a host of artisans and vendors.
Friday night offered a Uniform Party hosted by the Dyke Uniform Corps complete with "Survive the DI" for those who dared and a Uniform Contest, followed by a dance party which offered Temptation for those just wanting to shake it. Play spaces open around the clock during the weekend allowed the chance to shake it more vigorously while being safe, consensual, and risk-aware.
The weekend ended on a climactic note with brunch keynote speaker Allena Gabosch, an activist and educator in the sex-positive community and Executive Director of The Center for Sex Positive Culture in Seattle, Washington.
Next year is the 25th Anniversary of the International Ms Leather Contest. Plans are already in the works to make the next International Ms Leather and International Ms Bootblack Weekend, April 14th -17th, 2011 in San Francisco, bigger and better than ever.
