The Exiles are once again participating in the Queer Women of Color Film Festival as Community Partners, and the festivities are taking place this coming weekend!
And unlike many events this Pride month, all of the film screenings are FREE!
This year's Festival focus is on Queer Women of Color and Immigration. Film screenings, panels, and parties take place Friday through Sunday. The film screenings will be at the Brava Theater, 2789 24th Street at York, in San Francisco.
The film we're affiliated with is the centerpiece screening on Saturday night, Queerly Irreverent. The pre-screening reception begins at 6:00 p.m., and the film begins at 7:00 p.m.
Below is the schedule for the festival screenings as well as more information about the Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project (QWOCMAP), who put on this great festival each year.

5th annualQUeer Women of Color Film Festival
Presents
Community Convening focused on Queer Women of Color & Immigration
June
12-14, 2009 – San Francisco
San Francisco, CA – Queer Women of Color Media Arts
Project (QWOCMAP) presents the 5th Annual Queer Women of Color Film
Festival (QWOCFF), June 12-14, 2009 at the Brava Theater, with a Festival Focus on Queer Women of Color and Immigration. This year, the Film Festival
includes aCommunity Convening held on Saturday, June 13 at 2 p.m., which kicks off a
national campaign where films spark vital dialogue to build dynamic coalitions
that bridge “Multiple Borders.” Highlighting the Festival Focus, the Community Convening includes a
Panel Discussion and a special film screening. The Community Convening provides a unique opportunity for public discussion
and civic engagement. Breaking ground on immigration debates, the Community Convening brings
together immigrant, people of color and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender,
queer (LGBTQ) organizations to build grassroots coalitions that will reframe
contentious national debates about immigration, an issue that affects our
diverse Bay Area communities.
The
Community Convening provides a unique occasion for LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ
Community Partners to join together through the power of film to address the
pressing issue of immigration. The
Community Convening begins the dialogue on queer women of color and immigration
with a special screening of three short films created by QWOCMAP filmmakers: Look
Again by Jennifer Lin, where a lesbian couple does a tricky dance with ICE
agents; Bienvenida by Yaya Raiz, an
exploration of immigrant queer Latinas’ lives; and QWOCMAP Executive Director
and filmmaker Madeleine Lim’s Sambal
Belacan in San Francisco, an award-winning documentary about immigrant
queer Singaporeans grappling with home and belonging. By providing a human face to these issues,
these films will hopefully spark dialogue that attests to the personal and
political aspects of immigration.
A
Panel Discussion will follow the screening, providing a space to bridge
“Multiple Borders.”
Panel Discussion Speakersand organizations
include: Noemi Calonje from National Center for Lesbian Rights;
Philip Hwang of the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights; Laura Rivas of
National Network for Immigrant & Refugee Rights; and Lim from Queer Women
of Color Media Arts Project.
While these foremost organizations have paved the way
for issues around immigration, communities of color, and the arts respectively,
the Community Convening provides a groundbreaking opportunity for community
groups to build coalitions for social change.
Additionally, Convening Co-Presentersinclude: ALLGO, Audre Lorde Project,
Bay Area Immigrant Rights Coalition, Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights, and
the Transgender, Gender Variant
& Intersex Justice Project. Community Partners include: Black
Alliance for Just Immigration, Chicana/Latina Foundation, National Center for
Lesbian Rights National Network for Immigrant & Refugee Rights, and
Transgender Law Center.
This
San Francisco Convening will be the first of several around the country in
partnership with regional and national organizations. Additionally, QWOCMAP will release its first
DVD & Study Guide series on the issue of queer women of color and
immigration in 2010.
Each year, the Queer Women of Color Film Festival
world premieres a stunning array of brand new films. The 5th annual Film Festival
continues this immensely popular tradition by showcasing films, and initiating
an important vital public dialogue, on the theme of queer women of color and
immigration. The Community Convening
follows the Queer Women of Color Film Festival’s tradition of
galvanizing the queer women of color community through art and social
justice. The Community Convening uses
film to bring LGBTQ and non-LGBTQ Community Partners organizations, and it
marks an important moment in the debates about immigration and gay rights. The Community Convening will transform the
dialogue on immigration, celebrate the lives of queer women of color and their
multiple communities.
~About
Queer Women of Color Media Arts Project~
Queer
Women of Color Media Arts Project (QWOCMAP) creates, exhibits and distributes
new films that address vital social justice issues that concern queer women of
color. We actively invest in, develop
and nurture the leadership and creativity of Asian Pacific Islander,
Black/African American, Chicana/Latina, Native/American Indian and Mixed-Race
lesbian, bisexual, queer and questioning women. Our free programs guarantee full access to our community, especially to
low-income and immigrant queer women of color. Our work increases the arts participation, civic engagement and
visibility of our community to transform film and diversify the cultural fabric
of society. Our vision nurtures queer
women of color filmmakers as artist/activist leaders and creates systemic
change through art, activism and community building.
